The nomination was seconded by RICHARD MILNER.

“Chris has been a King breeder for many years and back in the 1980s when ANPA National Shows first started Chris, Trevor Bone and myself decided we needed to get away from the old Mondain style King then shown in Australia and move towards the style of King the Americans were producing.

The results we see today show how successful this move proved to be. Australian Kings are now up to world standard thanks to the imports and the expertise of the breeders who brought them in, and those who later obtained the bloodlines.

Chris was the leader and was almost impossible to beat in the show pens for more than 10 years and has won the ANPA National on many occasions as well as taking numerous Best of Breed and Champion titles at State and club shows.

Chris was, with the help and support of his wife Di, a foundation father of the King Club of Australia in 1997 and put enormous energy into both that club and ANPA as National Secretary.

He continues to contribute to both clubs today and is currently on the South Australian ANPA committee.

Chris has sponsored five international judges to judge Kings at the ANPA National Shows, and has willingly sold and gave away quality birds all over Australia to promote and improve the breed

He maintains relationships with King breeders in USA, France, UK, Germany, Hungary

Chris has travelled to France and England to judge and has been a great ambassador for the fancy, to ANPA and to the King Club.

He has won at least 10 Young Bird Challenge Awards at the South Australian Canary & Pigeon Show, as well as numerous awards for Champion King at regional shows and major all breed shows.

At the Royal Adelaide Show, Chris has won Champion King: 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993 and 1994, when he stopped showing.

Within Australia he has judged in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia.”

FOOTNOTE: Since this tribute was written and the records submitted to the ANPA Committee (bottom of page), it should be noted that Chris added to his long list of National wins by taking out Champion King at the 2010 show in Melbourne.

BOB GRANT nominated DOUGLAS McCLARY for the ANPA Meritorious Service award for his service as National Secretary. The nomination was seconded by ALAN STRACHAN.

“Doug McClary immigrated to Australia after having been a leading light in the fancy in Great Britain, as well as a successful breeder and exhibitor of the British Show Racer for 40 years.

Doug planned to retire and spend more time with his wife and family, and of course relax and enjoy developing the birds he brought with him and spreading the breed in Australia.

Typically, when there was no nomination for National Secretary in 2005, Doug volunteered and showed both enthusiasm and considerable patience, running again in 2007. During those four years he successfully tackled some of the major issues facing the fancy in Australia, and in particular ANPA.

He negotiated a deal with Australian Air Express and Qantas to make freighting birds around the country for the National Show viable; introduced an economy membership option and, when the manufacturer of rings stopped producing pigeon bands, organized bands to be imported from overseas.

He handled complaints about incidents in the fancy with dignity and the abuse and accusations which sometimes accompanied the issues with far more integrity than those making them.”

CHRIS SCHUTZ supported the presentation of the award with the following words.

“Doug is someone who has made a very significant contribution to our hobby in Australia on a number of fronts. Certainly via his service to ANPA in the challenging role of Secretary.

He has also made an enduring contribution to our shows with the extremely successful addition of the wonderful British Show Racer.

Without his original injection and huge support, this would never have occurred. It truly adds something to our list of popular exhibition pigeons.

Now, the breed adorns every possible show and has a huge following in the course of just six years with its own popular club. Phenomenal!

As well, a decisive contribution to the English Dragoon with support and now a club.

Again, a valuable, lasting contribution and service to the hobby.”

He is a true Englishman at heart and always will be. I think we all realize that.

For all of what that means to us, he did decide on becoming an Aussie in the best country on earth and has provided something enduring which would not otherwise have been there. A lifting of the standards across the board and a different view at times to challenge us on what we want from our hobby.

Along with the support and incredible contribution to the breeds of this country, he has truly served our pigeon hobby with dignity and enthusiasm.”
