Dr Colin Walker from the Melbourne Bird Clinic reports: On May 1 the PMV vaccine trial birds were again taken to the Melbourne Bird Veterinary Clinic. Blood was collected from all birds and forwarded to the lab for a PMV HI score. The average flock titre was 4. However two birds now have a reading of 2. Bearing in mind that a reading of 3 is required to be protective this means that these two birds ie: 10% of the group would be vulnerable to PMV if exposed.
Two of three feral pigeons submitted to the NSW DPI laboratory have tested positive to PMV1. The pigeons were found dead in the Ashfield municipality.
Current restrictions on bringing into Queensland pigeons, pigeon eggs and fittings used with pigeons, such as cages or egg boxes, will be revoked on December 17.
The Queensland Government is working towards repealing current restrictions on bringing pigeons, pigeon eggs and fittings used with pigeons into Queensland. This change is planned to come into effect in mid-December 2012.
A fourth case of PMV1 was confirmed yesterday in a loft of racing pigeons in the Liverpool – Bankstown area of Sydney, reports Dr George Arzey of the NSW DPI.
South Australia has now lifted all restrictions on pigeons entering the State as from October 1, Dr Malcolm Anderson, Manager Disease Surveillance, Biosecurity SA – Animal Health, has announced.
