Found a Pigeon?
Found a lost pigeon?
First ensure the bird has some water available, and give it some seed in case it’s hungry (parrot seed is fine, or even some rice, if nothing else is available try bread, pigeons do not eat meat.)
Check the bird’s legs for a registration ring (lifetime band made of anodized aluminium or plastic). Some breeds have long foot feathering ,so you may have to hunt through this to find it, often in these breeds the ring may be up high on the thigh. Once found write down all the numbers and letters on the ring.
If the letters “NPA” or “ANPA” appear, you are in luck, as the ring was issued by the Australian National Pigeon Association (ANPA) and can be traced to the the club and individual who bought the batch the ring number was in, and thus bred the pigeon.
To search out the owner of an NPA or ANPA rung bird yourself, check out the Ring Registry.

Important Note: If the ring does not have the letters NPA or ANPA, you will need to check other sources. if the ring has a clear plastic protective coating, it probably is a racing pigeon. So you will need to check for Racing Pigeon clubs on the web, or in the telephone book under clubs and societies.
Below are some state contacts for Racing pigeons. Always start with the club closest to you first. Good Luck and thank you for taking the time to help this bird.

I now believe the full ring is NPA 07 A 2336. It is not locked up so can fly away. Has been given seed and water.

Advice needed if I can find a home for a wild pigeon I rescued after it was hit by a Tram in Melbourne. It will never fly again (severed part of one wing) and lost one eye. Otherwise in great health (had it checked by a bird vet). I would love to keep it as a pet, however, I live in a small one bedroom apartment without a balcony. Your help would be much appreciated. It’s been with me for 2 months. Kindest regards, Lindy
no one on the 1300 number or the western australia number wants to pick up or reply…have let the bird back in the house for a fly… it seems cruel to leave it in a box…
I live near a place called Margaret River which is in the south west of western australia. It is a farming district…hope it doesnt have anything contagious as it was left in the house for two days as it recovered from what looked like fatigue…is eating heaps and drinking…
Found white and grey pigeon with green band TFPF 133080 2010 and a blue band with Tauris 006 and a white band. The pigeon has chinese type prints / stencils on both wings. can anyone tell me anything about this bird and where it may be from.
Thanks
Trina
Trina,
It might be a lost racer who hitched a ride on a ship. Please keep it locked up and away from any other birds until I get back to you. Where do you live?

Found a Syrian Dewlap cock bird in Llandilo NSW near Penrith 17/4/2010 came in with our race birds. He has rubber rings on both legs and jazz rings on top of the rubber rings as well.. No life ring. Our neighbour who races as well has a tipler that came in too so maybe someones loft door got left open. Have fed and watered him etc but don’t need fancy pigeons with the race birds.
Hi All About a week ago a quite tame pigeon/dove? started hanging around, sitting on top of our bird aviary and fences. I started leaving food & water out (which he seemed very happy about!) & we gradually coaxed him down to place him in our aviary with our 2 cockatiels. He has a pink band on his right leg but it doesn’t seem to have anything written on it. Haven’t been able to get that close & don’t want to freak him out by trying to pick him up. I have been searching the internet to find out what breed he is but can’t find a photo of a bird that shares his markings. He has a pure white head, tail & belly, but his chest & wings are a beautiful bronze colour. He seems happy enough – is it ok to keep him with the cockatiels (he sure eats more than they do!!) By the way I live in Trafalgar, Vic if anyone is looking for him
Anne,
It is unlikely you will find the owner of this bird without an ID band. If you are happy to keep it that is probably the best plan, if the parrots are not hassling it now they won’t, and it certainly won’t attack them. If you look under the contacts section of our website you will see the Victorian committee members, it might be that one of them lives near you and will be able to answer questions or have a look.

Has anybody seen my beautiful lost white dove or pigeon (Im not sure exactly which he is) with a grey band around one leg, and a black ring around the other leg? I live in Ivanhoe. My email is christina888999@gmail.com
We have a very tame pigeon visiting with reddish tag on foot – can only read B23 or it could be 823 – I am not game to try to catch it in case I hurt it. I think its the same one as Jen has seen as it has a distinctive white mark on head near its left eye. Its ok and has been around our place for about 4 days now, have left it bread, water and a little rice – will get bird seed if it continues to hang around. Its in Beaconsfield – call Lily 0433912025
Now I am seriously sad
That pigeon that I found, I fell in love with it, and looked after it, and now it has gone missing
I looked outside at 3.00am in the morning on Monday night, and he was asleep in the window where he sleeps which is outside my bedroom. Now he has gone. Maybe the bad storms we had in Melbourne scared him away? I guess I better tell you all what he looks like. He is a white pigeon with a fantail, and he has a black plastic ring around one leg and he has a grey plastic ring around the other leg. Neither ring has any numbers on it. I live in Ivanhoe in Melbourne. I am so sad. I never knew a lost pigeon could break my heart, but it has
His name is Snowie. This pigeon was cheering me up from my white dove who had going missing in January. What should I do? Maybe I have a curse on me and I am just not meant to have a pigeon to love?
Oh yeah, he’s welcome at our place. Just thought when I found this site I should list it in case someone in the area may have lost, and is looking for, their pet fantail.
Hi, Found a white fantail pigeon. Leichhardt NSW area. Has a pink ring on with no numbers. Looking after it at home. Was being stalked by some cats and didn’t seem able to fly away, just sat there. Dad rescued it and brought it home. Weighed nothing at all. Sat there eating for hours. Didn’t look like a fantail when it was rescued. Tail was down and dirty/matted, head forward – look more like a normal white (dirty) pigeon. After a few days has put on weight and the tail has fanned up and it’s head has gone back to look more like a fantail, with a matted tail. Had it for a week, has spent whole time sitting on bottom of aviary eating and walking around. Thought it couldn’t fly, but it flew up for the first time yesterday in the aviary. Does tail affect flight? Doesn’t seem to fly too well, maybe still getting back its ability to fly. Seems to fly itself into corners where it then gets stuck. Keep needing to put it back on the ground, where it just waddles around again.
Are you prepared to keep it Val? The tail does not effect flight, though they are not great fliers, they definitely can fly. I am sure it will in time moult out the dirty feathers and recover fully, pigeons are surprisingly hardy. It will also get used to the aviary.
Hi Brad , I would like to pass on the correct contact ph. numbers for the ring

Melbourne Pigeon Society ph. 03 98443109
Victorian Pigeon Society ph. 03 93605066
Dandenong Fancy Pigeon Society ph. 03 59957710

an NPA or ANPA ring . Yours Sincerely Evan .
Have managed to get closer to the bird…as well as the light grey body it has dark grey head with a pink/green tinge and a white mark above it’s left eye. Currently sitting on our fence but not sure what to do later if there are storms which are forecast. Any suggestions please?
Currently sitting on our fence. Dark grey bird with light grey front and reddish-pink ring on its left leg with “Call…” on it. Unfortunately that’s all I could see before bird flew up onto a high roof. Have left water and bread on fence for it so hopefully it will fly back down. Is there some way I can call for it so it will come closer???
Beaconsfield in Victoria. 0416 220 966
That Phone Number for Cathleen should read : 9639 1474 .
