Found a Pigeon?

Found a lost pigeon?

First ensure the bird has some water available, and give it some seed in case it’s hungry (parrot seed is fine, or even some rice, if nothing else is available try bread, pigeons do not eat meat.)

Check the bird’s legs for a registration ring (lifetime band made of anodized aluminium or plastic). Some breeds have long foot feathering ,so you may have to hunt through this to find it, often in these breeds the ring may be up high on the thigh. Once found write down all the numbers and letters on the ring.

If the letters “NPA” or “ANPA” appear, you are in luck, as the ring was issued by the Australian National Pigeon Association (ANPA) and can be traced to the the club and individual who bought the batch the ring number was in, and thus bred the pigeon.

To search out the owner of an NPA or ANPA rung bird yourself, check out the Ring Registry.

List of pigeon ring numbers (181.1 KiB, 1,768 hits)

Important Note: If the ring does not have the letters NPA or ANPA, you will need to check other sources. if the ring has a clear plastic protective coating, it probably is a racing pigeon. So you will need to check for Racing Pigeon clubs on the web, or in the telephone book under clubs and societies.

    Found Pigeon ?
Cathleen of Baulkham Hills has a bird ‘hanging around’ her house . It is described as a white ‘garden type’ Fantail . It previously had a mate but the mate is no longer there . She hasn’t caught the bird , but advises that it appears to have a decorative bell or such on its leg ? If anyone is aware of a lost bird in that area they could call Cathleen on 0639 1474 .

Hello, and thank you so very much for your answer, I do really appreciate it a lot. I am so glad that this bird loves me and that I love it too. He can fly away if he wants to, but he doesn’t want to, so he must like it where he is :-) He has like a Paris Hiltion life of pampering now

Should I get him a mate later? Will the other pigeons who come to our backyard be good mates, or do I have to buy some kind of a special mate? What happens if they don’t have a mate?

So I don’t feel guilty when I’m old, is there anywhere else where I should ring or email to check if someone has reported him missing with a description of him?

Is it okay if I ask a quick question? I was just wondering why people put one grey band and one black band on a pigeons legs if they do’t put any numbers on them. What would be their purpose of doing that it in the first place?

Thanks heaps for your help, I do appreciate it a lot :-)

    Hi Christina ,
With no identification band there is no way we can detect the owner . There are a million lost pigeons out there , this one was lucky to find you . You have done the right thing by advertising in this forum , I don’t think anyone is trying to mislead you into describing the bird . If someone were to come up with a satisfactory description of the bird , you can decide . I would suggest that the bird is happy where it is ! If/when he/she needs a mate , I’m sure you could find one .
    Regards , Bob GRANT .

Hello, I live in Victoria. If you have lost a pigeon, could you kindly let me know on this forum what colour is it, and where you live? I dont want to describe the colour here in case a million people say “oh yeah that’s mine’. Like in the department store where I work, if someone loses a purse and we do an announcvement over the loudspeaker that if someone has lost a purse to go to the desk. One minute later about 20 people come rushing to the desk and say “yes that is my purse” So we make them describe the colour of the purse first and then they say “no its not mine dont worry”, because none of them can describe it. I don’t mean to be fussy, but working in security, and because I love this bird I found so much already, I have to follow proper security procedures. Thank you for your understanding

Hello, what does it mean if you find a pigeon that has a grey plastic band on one leg and a black plastic band on the other leg, but neither band has any numbers at all written on it. Does that mean that I can’t trace his owner and I can keep him? I really love him already, but I can trace an owner if I must

Gday I have found a pigeon, who is very tame, allowing me to keep it in a cage with food and water,
The ring is CTRPA which I believe now is Chinese-Taipei, what do I do from here the pigeon appears well but a long way from home…?

    any ideas would be appreciated.

    regards Paul

      Paul,

There are any number of possibilities regards this bird, I am not an expert on flying (pigeon racing) clubs but it is possible there is one with those initials that is not Chinese Taipei. And of course it could well be, having gone astray in a race and landing on a ship heading for Australia. IN which case there might be quarantine issues. I advise in meantime to keep it caged with food and water.
      Where are you located?

Pigeon flew (literally) into our metal garage late this afternoon. Has a blue tag on right foot – numbers that we can read are 06775 and the green tag on left foot R99. We’ve given it seed and water, but would love its owner to claim – we are in Redcliffe near Perth airport – 0438 927 842 – anytime. have also left message on WA lost pigeon officer answer machine. thanks

Hi, we have a white pigeon with brown flecks who is hanging around the front of our warehouse in Dandenong South. It has been here for 2 days now and seems healthy but maybe a little confused. I know nothing about homing pigeons and am unable to check for a tag but this bird seems quite tame. Im worried for it because it moves away from cars (and people) slowly and we are a busy transport company with trucks coming in and out constantly. If you believe this is your bird please feel free to contact me on 0425 247 170 (Mandy).

    Debra ,
The ‘Central Coast” prefix indicates that it is a Racing Pigeon .
A free call to 1300 766622 or NSW – Allen Wonson (02) 9644 7613 will identify the owner , have the ring details on hand when you call .
    Regards , Bob GRANT .
