Found a Pigeon?

Found a lost pigeon?

First ensure the bird has some water available, and give it some seed in case it’s hungry (parrot seed is fine, or even some rice, if nothing else is available try bread, pigeons do not eat meat.)

Check the bird’s legs for a registration ring (lifetime band made of anodized aluminium or plastic). Some breeds have long foot feathering ,so you may have to hunt through this to find it, often in these breeds the ring may be up high on the thigh. Once found write down all the numbers and letters on the ring.

If the letters “NPA” or “ANPA” appear, you are in luck, as the ring was issued by the Australian National Pigeon Association (ANPA) and can be traced to the the club and individual who bought the batch the ring number was in, and thus bred the pigeon.

To search out the owner of an NPA or ANPA rung bird yourself, check out the Ring Registry.

Important Note: If the ring does not have the letters NPA or ANPA, you will need to check other sources. if the ring has a clear plastic protective coating, it probably is a racing pigeon. So you will need to check for Racing Pigeon clubs on the web, or in the telephone book under clubs and societies.

    Hi,
my boyfriend found a white Fantail with brown wings at Eastern Creek, near Rooty Hill, NSW on Friday last week being attacked by a raven. Very friendly, doesn’t mind being handled, but has no band. She is safe and happy, but would like to find his/her home! Please contact 0421-817-182.

Thanks Brad the file is now working and I’ve rung the number provided for the Melbourne Pigeon Society and left a message, hopefully someone rings me back as I’m really worried about it esp with this hot weather we’re having at the moment.

Hi there, for quite some time we have two pigeons (couple) living with us amongst the chooks.
Very beautiful ones and they have adopted the chook house and also lay eggs in there.
This is going on for at least 1 – 2 years.
Just recently I took photos of them while they were eating and when I looked at one photo very closely I found a purple tag on the female pigeon, I could only see part of the number: ..80 (or D) 96. They are happy here, but now that I know they had anowner, I want to report this. Let me know if you’d like some photos.
Perhaps you can let me know where I can go from here. Thank you, Julie

Julie, Can I suggest that if they are happy there and you are happy to have them around I am sure it is the best solution. Post a photo anyway but if they are racers or fliers I would say best leave them happy!!

Wanted to add as well that I couldn’t access the ring registry as it said I was not permitted to view the file?

Thanks Caroline and sorry about the ring registry issue, I thought I had fixed it but obviously not :-(

Will try again and in the meantime I will contact my Victorian colleagues and see if they can help.

Pigeon found in my garage at Heritage Park, Logan City last weekend, but sadly did not survive. Suspect hawk attack. Aluminium Band showed: SS 306 08 21.29. Tried to phone several numbers for help but no-one answered and was on hold to the RSPCA for 45 minutes without answer.

Thanks for the message Tempe, sorry to hear about the bird dying, sounds like a race bird attacked by a hawk. Did you try the phone numbers on this page, and still have no luck?

I reported a pair of lost white fantail pigeons in Safety Bay, WA. The leg band is green, not red as reported.

Hi Sarah , Thanks for caring . The ‘Cheep’ indicates that ‘she’ is still young , considering the age and that her flights have been cut , she must have come from very near to where she was picked up . If she has no ring it will be hard for us to find an owner , but if you email a photo and details of where she was found we could publicise more widely ?

We had what we believe is a young pigeon handed in to our vet clinic to be put down today (Wildlife carer bought it in). When we took it from the box we saw it’s flight feathers had been deliberately trimmed so she is now with me as we felt she may have been a pet. I have photos if someone has an email I can send them to for ID? She/he has a safe home with my family now but we would like to know what she is – she makes a ‘cheep’ noise – not the ‘coo’ I am used to hearing from pigeons!

I have a Danzig Highflier that has no leg band at my place every afternoon for the past week. It’s not timid so I thought it maybe a lost bird rather than a wild one.
    I’m in Scarborough Perth.

Yes, you are correct, and we are already onto it as 2009 banded birds are starting to turn up “on the streets”.

just a quick note on the ANPA ring registry online . I think the phone numbers displayed for each club in Australia is old and outdated . This really needs to be fixed
so that the correct person can be contacted quickly. Once this is fixed each club
should ensure any changes that need to be made are done promptly. This should
help all concerned especially the public who are trying to help a lost pigeon .
p.s it is also important that the correct persons ph. no. is on all years 2001-2009.
    yours sincerely e.s.

Hi, a pigeon with two coloured bands on his leg has been in my garden all afternoon. I live in Strathfield, NSW. I approached it but could not find any identifying numbers or letter on the tag so I can’t track it to a pigeon association. I managed to give it some water and seeds. Is it possible to trace the owners somehow? Should I contact Allen Wonson or is there someone else I can contact?
    Thank you for your time,
    Chantal
