Hello i was wondering if someone can help with some info. a little while ago a pigeon flew into my house, there were no tags on the ankles. i took it to the vet as it didn’t look very well and was told that it was a yound bird and that it had some wing damage. I managed to somewhat nurse it back to health, but it is not a great flyer i am afraid that if i let it go it may become prey to cats or other wild birds. it is currently living in a borrowed modified rabbit hutch. Whenever i am home it is out of the hutch and It follows me around everywhere like a puppy dog, then nuzzles into my neck and falls asleep while i am sitting on the couch watching tv. I would like to know if someone can tell me where is the best place to get information on how to best care for the pigeon as i have decided that i would love to keep it. Also I will need to buy a cage for it because as stated the one he/she is currently sleeping in is on loan. So i would like to know what size cage/avery i should get for it as i dont want to get one that is too small. Also
Do i need a special licence to keep a pet pigeon in victoria?

I should probably describe Schnappe as that may help, I never realised how many different breeds of pigeon there are. She (i think it is a she) is dark grey and when in the light shines green and magenta in the neck area, and to me appears to be the same sort of pigeon that likes to flock around citys and parks.

Hi Amanda,

It sounds like your vet was right about your new pigeon pal, and you are also probably right that if you were to release it even into a flock in the park or whatever there is no guarantee it would adapt quickly or survive … but it might, many racing pigeons who don’t make it home end up living in these colonies.
However, since you have decided to keep the bird, and since it will be liberated at times, you probably don’t need much more than a cockie cage for it to actually live in.
I suggest you make contact with Michael Spadoni, who lives at Lovely Banks near Geleong, who should be able to offer advice regards the best place to get seed etc.
If you lok at the Contacts section at the top of the home page, you will see his info under the Vic/Tasmania heading.
He might even be able to provide a mate for company for your bird when it is an adult, if you wish.
